Creating Assets V1 (Ryan)

First I need to outline that we was told we could use stock models within our work as long as we rightfully said we had used them. However, the way I see it we should at least try making our own and if they work then that’s great we have our own unique library of models to use. Using our own I would feel more accomplished with the final product. This isn’t to say we wont be using stock models however we can blend them together showing how I’ve at least given it a good attempt. This leads me onto the purpose of this post, which is to show the methods and journeys I took to gather the right images.

So here I am in Lincoln and the main focus / inspiration for the project’s location and story was a post on the woodland trusts webpage regarding Smithy Woods (Chapeltown) which I previously covered within my research, Woodland trust Research (Extended), as this location was only an hour away I planned myself a visit. Again my reasoning was to get an idea of the ancient woodland itself, even if we don’t do a 1:1 replica. Here is a list of equipment I decided to take:

  • GoPro Hero 4 – To record the whole trip and my methods.
  • Canon 600D – To take the high res images
  • Iphone 6s Plus – Surprisingly good for getting the right quality images at a small file size.

See the Video below to see how it went:

Although I’ve sped up the video you can clearly see how boggy the location was from the day before, which had rain, this I mistakenly didn’t look into first. This aside I managed to capture a range of items for myself to play around with. After a failed attempt to continue through the woodland I decided to cut my losses and head over to another nearby area which I could base my own models off. So over to Grenoside Woods I traveled. Capture

This location was much more suited with the previous weather with it’s dedicated footpath. This was in fact the location I took the most images, a third of which I decided to use the iPhone which needed to be more stabilized but took some really good images. Just like the previous woodland I recorded the whole process. See below:

To see the results from this adventure out keep an eye out for my next post which will hopefully bring us some detailed models whilst keeping the meshes simple.
